Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Mac to take part? #
No. With only a phone you can test chat, questions, documents, photos, voice notes and memory. A Mac with an Apple chip gets the full Iris, including voice, music, WhatsApp, reminders and opening apps. If your Mac has an Intel chip, write to us first: that build is behind. See the table on Guides.
Is Iris listening to everything I say? #
While Iris is on and not muted, speech near your Mac is turned into text so she can catch her name. She only acts when you talk to her. Our server does not save the audio, but during the alpha the diagnostic logs we receive can include words she heard. If you want privacy, mute her with Command + Shift + M. What Iris sees explains this in full.
Can Iris send a WhatsApp message on her own? #
No. She types it and reads it back, and only sends when you say "send it". If a message ever goes out without you confirming, report it straight away. That is the most serious kind of bug.
Why do I have to use the same email everywhere? #
Your email is your account. The same email on your phone and Mac links them, so your memory and chats are shared and your phone can send errands to your Mac. We also use it to find your logs when you report a bug.
I didn't get the sign-in code. #
Check spam. Wait 30 seconds and ask for a new code. A code works for 10 minutes, and only the newest one works. If nothing arrives after a few tries, write to support@irisforu.com.
Iris stopped answering when I say her name. #
First check the microphone is not muted (menu bar icon > Mute microphone). Then choose Setup and microphone check... from the menu bar icon and do the voice step again. If she still does not answer, report it with the time.
She says she is out of voice, or out of messages, for today. #
You have used your daily allowance. It resets at 5:30 am India time. Testers with 2 confirmed bugs get higher limits.
How do I know if a bug is already known? #
Check Known issues. If it is there, it will count as a duplicate. If you are not sure, report it anyway with a clear description. The worst case is 0 points.
How long until I hear back about a report? #
Usually within minutes you get an email with the verdict. Points stay pending until the bug is fixed and we approve the award, which can take a few days. You can follow everything on My reports.
When do I get paid? #
Once your final points add up to Rs 200 or more, you can cash out by UPI. Payouts go out once a week. We ask for your UPI ID only at your first cash-out. See Points and payouts.
Should I update every time a new version comes out? #
Yes. Your Mac updates itself. On iPhone, update in TestFlight. On Android and Windows, download the new build when Iris tells you. Always check a bug on the latest version before you report it. See Updating.
Can I tell my friends about Iris, or post screenshots? #
Please don't. What you see in the alpha is confidential. If a friend wants to test, they can sign up on this site and wait to be approved.
Iris showed up in my screen share in class or a meeting. #
The setting Appear in screen shares/recordings is on. Untick it from the menu bar icon before you share your screen, or hide her with Command + Shift + I.
How do I uninstall Iris? #
- Mac: quit Iris (menu bar icon > Quit Iris), then drag Iris from Applications to the Bin.
- iPhone and iPad: press and hold the Iris icon, then Remove App.
- Android: Settings > Apps > Iris > Uninstall.
- Windows: Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Iris > Uninstall.
Uninstalling does not delete your account, memories or chats. To delete those, write to support@irisforu.com.
How do I contact you? #
Email support@irisforu.com. For bugs, please use the Report a bug form instead, so your report can earn points.
