Known issues

These are problems and limits we already know about. Reports of these count as duplicates and earn no points. If you find a new way that one of these causes trouble, or it is worse than described here, that can still be a new bug.

Mac #

  • Iris hears the room, not just you. She acts only when she hears her name, but speech near your Mac is turned into text while she is on. This is how she works today, not a bug. See What Iris sees.
  • She cannot hear you from across a room. Speak at a normal distance from your Mac's microphone.
  • Her name is easy to mishear, for example as "virus" or "eyes". Running Setup and microphone check... from the menu bar icon helps her learn your voice. Report it if she still ignores her name after that.
  • Speech-to-text is set up for English. Indian names and Indian English are fine. Full sentences in Hindi or other languages may come through wrong.
  • There can be a pause of a few seconds when she has to work something out before answering. A long silence with no answer at all is a bug worth reporting.
  • The first song takes a few seconds. Iris fetches a song before she plays it.
  • Browser tab commands work best in Chrome and Chrome-based browsers (Brave, Edge, Arc).
  • Correcting an email makes a second draft. If you ask Iris to change an email she drafted, she makes a new draft instead of editing the first one. Delete the old draft in Mail.
  • Sources for answers are plain text. When Iris looks something up, the sources on screen are not clickable links yet.
  • Timers and alarms only ring if your Mac is awake with Iris open.
  • Intel Macs: the Intel build is behind the Apple chip build. Most testers should use an Apple chip Mac.

Phone #

  • No hands-free talking on iPhone or Android. Use voice notes. Hands-free talk is on iPad only.
  • Google Drive may show "Google Drive isn't available yet" on some accounts.
  • Errands wait for your Mac. If your Mac is asleep or Iris is closed, an errand waits up to 24 hours, then expires. This is on purpose.
  • One Mac per account. If two Macs are signed in to the same account, an errand may run on either one.

Windows #

Windows is the newest version and many Mac features are not there yet: WhatsApp, Reminders, Calendar, email drafts, browser tab control, terminal tab control, Wi-Fi on and off, dark mode, Do Not Disturb, and checking what Spotify or another app is playing. Iris should say so when you ask for one of these. If she claims she did it, that is a bug.

Everywhere #

  • Daily allowance. Each account has a daily limit on how much Iris can listen, think and speak. When it runs out, she tells you. It resets at 5:30 am India time. Running out is not a bug. Running out much faster than you expected is worth reporting, with what you were doing.
