Install Iris on iPhone and iPad

Checking for the latest build...

Test versions of iPhone apps come through TestFlight, Apple's free app for trying apps before they reach the App Store. This takes about 5 minutes.

You need: iOS 17 or later (iPadOS 17 or later on iPad). To check, open Settings > General > About and look at "iOS Version".

Install #

  1. Open the App Store, search for TestFlight, and install it. It is made by Apple.

  2. On your iPhone or iPad, open this link: testflight.apple.com/join/BDby9zr9 (opens in a new tab). It is also the button at the top of this page.

  3. If the page says the beta is not accepting testers right now, Apple is still checking the newest build. Try again in a few hours; we will email you when it is open.

  4. TestFlight opens. Tap Accept, then Install.

  5. When it finishes, tap Open, or find Iris on your home screen.

  1. Type your email and tap the button to get a code. Use the same email you use on your Mac, if you have one.

  2. Type the 6-digit code from the email. There is no password.

  3. Iris asks if she can send you notifications. Tap Allow. Notifications tell you when she has replied, or when a job you sent to your Mac is done.

What you can do on iPhone #

  • Chat with Iris: ask questions, ask her to find things out, ask her to write.
  • Send photos, take a photo with the camera, or send a document.
  • Record a voice note: tap the mic. Iris writes out what you said and replies in the chat. The first time, iPhone asks to use the microphone. Tap Allow.
  • Ask for a Word file, an Excel sheet, slides or a PDF.
  • See what Iris remembers about you, and remove anything.
  • If you have a Mac: send her jobs to do on it, and see if your Mac is awake.

iPad #

On iPad, Iris lives on the screen, the way she does on a Mac. She listens for her name: say "Iris" and ask. Follow-ups need no name for 30 seconds. She answers out loud, and the chat is one tap away. Your iPad's screen stays on while she is open.

If it doesn't work #

  1. No invite email. Check spam and the Promotions tab. Make sure you are looking at the email you signed up with. If it is still not there after a day, write to us.
  2. TestFlight says the invite is not valid, or the beta is full. Write to support@irisforu.com with the exact message.
  3. "Requires iOS 17" or the Install button is grey. Your iPhone needs a newer iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If your iPhone cannot update to iOS 17, you can still test on another device.
  4. The sign-in code does not arrive. Check spam. Wait 30 seconds and ask for a new code. A code works for 10 minutes, and only the newest one works.
  5. The app opens and closes straight away. That is a launch failure, and it counts as a real bug. Report it on the Report a bug page.
  6. Still stuck? Write to support@irisforu.com with your iPhone model, iOS version and a screenshot.
